Adler\Smith Gallery is proud to announce its next exhibition: “The Last of the Tide Riders”, Featuring Original Art and Vessels from Ben Brough and Damion Fuller.
Ben Brough is a former professional surfer and icon of the sport whose punk rocker vibe and high flying air-game indelibly stamped the ’90’s and early aughts with an edgy, devil-may-care attitude, the otherwise wholesome visage of that culture so desperately needed. Brough’s influence on brands like Volcom remain forefront in their optic; both in their endorsement of outsider/radical athletes and esthetically in their continuing embrace of an outre-DIY-Joe-Strummer vibe.
Brough’s paintings and constructions bring an expressionist immediacy to his vision of the world. His figurative paintings riff on Picasso-esque cubist abstraction and the molten Kona-side surf/skate/rock culture of his upbringing. They are vibrant works, gestural, tempestuous and direct, raw in their beauty and honesty.
Damion Fuller is an accomplished and widely-exhibited ceramist from New South Wales, Australia, whose modest-yet-stately, vessels emblazoned with toothy sharks and other coastal dwellers, celebrate his passion for the ocean; its sciences and mythologies. Fuller’s creations are concise, unadorned forms, devoid of handles and curly cues. Their handsomely modern silhouettes are reminiscent of the paintings of Giorgio Morandi. Before firing his work with cobalt slip, the artist draws into the raw clay with an intuitive line, depicting solitary figures, fish and other maritime subjects whose scale frequently wraps the form entirely, making for a type of rotational interaction with his work. They are delightful and yet serious. Optimistic even in their monasticism.
